Thank you, Tom. Sometimes even the people that raise the issue of male suicide are clueless about it. An example is the fact that Augustine Kposawa's research, which found that divorced men's suicide risk increases 8 times. He attributed that to the loss of men's social network that they had with marriage, but was apparently oblivious to the fact that men are destroyed by divorce courts.
Great post. Thanks, Tom. When considering male hierarchies, I wondered about fields in which some of the top men are gay--leading conductors in orchestras and opera houses, designers, and so on. I wondered about their place in a hierarchy that was based on reproductive access. Financial success and prestige are also important in male hierarchies. As to the size of the sports industry vs. cosmetic industry, I wondered if a higher percentage of men were invested in sports than women, as a percentage, were invested in the personal care that is part of the cosmetic industry. There are a lot of women at football and basketball games; how big is the male side of the personal care / cosmetic field? I know that the latter has been growing. There is a very good point below (among many good points) about women gaining status by taking on or challenging men.
Interesting ideas Allen. I think that men really appreciate excellence and sexual orientation is a minor factor. Men admire great conductors no matter their sexual orientation. Since the bottom line is about reproductive access I would guess that gay males would be less of a threat since they are not after the same prize!
So, if testosterone enhances status seeking yet women seem almost as interested in status as men, what accounts for the higher levels of testosterone in males?
I'm going to hazard a guess that it's a lot harder for men to achieve that status. A woman only has to be born lucky, work a little on her sex appeal, and stragically spread her legs to get a high status male while men have to work and train hard for years to be the star quarterback, the CEO of a company, or the lead guitarist in a popular rock band before a high status woman would look at twice at him.
Women also achieve their status much more often through aggression than men, in my humble opinion. They are much more likely to play dirty than the average guy and, once they have a man they can manipulate, use him to achieve their goals.
That’s sad comment Derpetology. I am a woman. Many of my friends are women. Yes there are women who deliberately target successful males but they are rare. Most women like men who can relax with them, in whose company they can laugh and enjoy themselves, rarely does money or status come into it. Most women nowadays go out to work. I was talking to a successful man the other day and he said that extreme feminism was a deliberate social construct. In his early years a man could go to work in whatever field, no collar, blue collar, white collar and support a wife and children through his work. Women worked in the home. The plan as he outlined it was twofold. To get women to view being a housewife as a form of unpaid slavery and to get them out into the labour market so that the women would cost less than male employees and that labour costs would become cheaper. Males could be paid less than an economic rate if women were working for less than men. Equality of earnings between men and women in the same labour market would get the same rates of pay but both would be less than the wages would have been before women automatically entered the work place. I found this an interesting take on the mechanism of social structuring and to be honest, he may well be right.
Why would you say "deliberately target successful men" as if it's something abberant? In the search for mates, high status is literally synonymous with attractiveness. Of course women prefer attractive men to unattractive men, whatever it is they're attracted to personally. It's the same with men, though men and women are generally attracted to different characteristics. If you think money rarely matters much to women, you're deluded. How do you explain hypergamy? Why aren't there just as many women who marry men of lower socioeconomic status than themselves? Famous wealthy men marry waitresses all the time. How often do famous wealthy women marry waiters?

So true. And most really don't care.

Why do no men talk about the damage to society and to mens' psyche of vasectomy?
Thank you.
