Understanding Men #10: Moral Typecasting

As we have seen, testosterone pushes men from the inside to strive for status. Precarious manhood socially pushes men from the outside and judges men’s success or lack of success thus putting men into a hierarchy. Those men at the top of the hierarchy are applauded and given special privileges. The men at the top are assumed to be able to take care of their needs. They are at the top. Those men at the bottom are deemed disposable and few care about their needs. In both cases there is little concern for the man’s emotional needs. Those at the top don’t need help and those at the bottom aren’t worth it. This video takes a very brief look at the work of Kurt Gray and Tania Reynolds in the area of moral typecasting. This is important to know considering the moral typecasting research maps out this lack of empathy for the pain of men and boys. The moral typecasting research helps us understand why empathy and understanding is limited for men. This is one factor that underlies what is being called the empathy gap.
